Festivities and ethnography:
The festivities in honour of Santo Espírito take place after the Pentecost and have a strong religious meaning to the island inhabitants. The festivities of Santa Cruz take place in the first Sunday of August. In Lajes the Emigrant Festival is celebrated in the third weekend of July.
The lace work and embroidery, blankets weaved in ancient looms and the hydrangea pith flowers are unique pieces of art, representative of the local handicraft.
In what concerns to folklore, Chamarrita Encaracolada, Sapateia, Pezinho de Baixo, Rema and Manjericão are the most popular songs.
The ethnographic museum, located in Santa Cruz, presents an important collection of objects that represent the way local ancestors lived, mainly fishing and land working instruments.
