Places to visit:
Due to its dimension, it is easy to visit the whole island. However, there are some outstanding places Rocha dos Bordões is a lava formation that gained vertical grooves, forming a cliff of significant high. It is a magnificent geological monument.
Morro Alto is the highest point of the island with 914 metres. It offers a panoramic view over lagoons and greenish valleys where small streams run, and over the village-places of Ponta Delgada, Fajã Grande and Fajãzinha.
In the central part of the island, Sete Lagoas, Lagoa Funda, Branca, Seca, Rasa, Comprida, Lomba and Funda das Lajes are lagoons of rare beauty.
Cascatas - Between Fajãzinha and Ponta da Fajã there are about twenty waterfalls, being the tallest one Ribeira Grande. It is a wondrously interesting zone.
Pedras do Frade e da Freira are rocks that due to erosion gained the shape of a monk (frade) and a nun (freira). Nearby, one can find Gruta do Galo (cock’s cave), a rocky formation with a shape resembling a cock. This cave presents interesting geological formations, namely the entrance that looks like a cathedral.
Ilhéu de Monchique - this islet is the most western point of Europe.
Gruta dos Enxaréus is a cave located on the seashore, between Santa Cruz and Caveira. It has 50 metres length and 25 metres width.
Falésia da Rocha Alta is cliff that offers a view over many small islets.
Baia da Alagoa is a bay dotted with islets and sandbanks.
