Discover and settlement:
Its settlement began in 1450. In the beginning the island was called Ilha de Jesus Cristo; its present name derives from the fact that it was the third (terceira in Portuguese) island of the archipelago to be discovered.
Due to its localisation, Terceira was a port of call for the Portuguese ships crossing the Atlantic.
Angra was the first village-place to become City, and it gained its final name, Angra do Heroismo (heroism’s bay) during the XIX century.
